Lifting Gear Training

Training for lifting gear is a legal requirement, one of the numerous reasons the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) exist. Training is not a suggestion, it is federal law, and the cost of not complying is much more than a fine.

ACT Construction Training sources training for legal compliance and works with your people to keep you from the hassle of sourcing compliance yourself.

With ACT Membership, training for lifting gear is sourced as a group. This reduces cost and you are working with training providers we have worked with and trust.

What the law says

LOLER – Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 – states that the lifting gear must be operated by someone that is competent and that competency must be proven, along with compliance to training records.

PUWER, or the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, works in conjunction with LOLER as far as regulations related to lifting operations in your scheme.

If there is an accident, and you have no proof of the operative receiving training, you have a significant problem. The issue would not be if they knew what they were doing, but rather the opposite.

What the training covers

ACT training is customized to the lifting equipment your personnel will be using. This may include training on:

  • Chain blocks, lever hoists, and pull lifts
  • Selection and safe usage of slings, shackles, and rigging
  • Calculation of safe working loads and
  • Inspection pre use — check and what to look for
  • Lifting operations planning and supervising
  • On-site lifting block and tackle pulley systems

Your team will not be offered the nearest option, but will be provided courses based on their actual needs — whether that is a short course or full assessed training.

It’s not just about compliance

Lifting accidents don’t just hurt the people doing the lifting. It could involve equipment failure, an overloaded sling, or poorly rated shackles, and could affect everyone working nearby. There are almost always preventable reasons behind the failure, and they usually come down to training gaps or an “it’s faster to do this” mentality.

Trained lift operatives know to look for issues and stop the lift. That’s what the training is for.

How ACT takes care of it

We cut the hassle of finding lifting gear training providers and do it for you. You don’t have to compare training options, or hope the person you’ve booked actually knows what they’re doing.

Just tell us what equipment your team uses and how many people need to be trained. We’ll get back to you with the correct course from the correct provider, and we’ll give you a group booking discount.

Not sure how current your team’s training is?

If it’s been a while, that’s about the right amount of time. Come to us, we’ll help you to give ACT Construction Training a call and we’ll help you to figure out what’s been done and what’s needed.

I can head right into the WordPress editor, and CMS, and make the same edits to the CPCS & CSCS pages if you’d like.
